Sontek Racing took part on the Botniaring race 13.-14.7.2024 with three drivers (Petri Kiikka in the Mustang, Jani Turunen in the Falcon and Jenni Silventoinen in a Formula)
We arrived well in advance on Wednesday and setup the camp and prepared the cars.
Jenni got to the track already on Thursday to test the newly acquired formula to decide which car to the race with. A new formula was chosen.
On Friday, all drivers had a training session, which went well for everyone. The cars were fitted with new AIM -cameras, which were also tested for the first time. The formula had to be adjusted to have the settings suitable for this track. Thanks to the team for a great stretch when adjusting the car. On Saturday everything was ready and prepped for the race.
On Saturday, the race day started with a qualifying session, of which P3 for Jenni, P2 for Petri and pole position for Jani. Jenni had the earliest start. The start left some room for improvement and there were few driver errors due to the new equipment. Jenni managed to finish third overall and second in class. An awesome performance with a car that had only been driven a few laps by Jenni before this race.
Next to the starting line was Jani with the Falcon. The start was not Jani's best, but Jani fought himself to victory
Petri was the last to start the race in the mustang. There was no lack of excitement in Petri's race when another driver put his marks on the side and bumper of the Mustang. Despite this, Petri drove to second place in his class.
After the race, a little more normal maintenance was required, as some metal had to be bent and re-attached.
On Sunday, the weather was a bit unpredictable, but both Jenni and Jani were able to race on a dry track.
Jenni started the race from P3, and the start was clearly better than in Saturday's race. Jenni drove the race breathing down on the leader’s neck throughout the race. On the final lap, Jenni's small mistake gave the leader a bit of a gap, but Jenni grabbed second place in this race as well and set the best lap time in the class.
Jani started from pole again, taking the second win of the weekend after robotically precise driving and setting a track record in his own class.
Petri was able to start the second race from P2. The start was textbook successful, and Petri chased the leader until the last lap. The weather was challenging, as it the track was dry in the beginning, but in the middle of the race there was plenty of rain. The cars had tires meant for dry, with which the last laps of the race were more skating than track racing. However, Petri finished second in his own class.
The race weekend was a rewarding and the development of the drivers compared to last year is spectacular.
